Safeguarding Sunday

Sunday 11th October is ‘Safeguarding Sunday’ – a time to remind ourselves of the importance of having our safeguarding and safer recruitment records up to date. In our churches we are all responsible for the safety of both our young people and any vulnerable adults.

This is a good time to let all those who serve in our churches in any capacity, be it serving refreshments, pastoral care, music group, children’s work, prayer ministry, house groups and a whole plethora of other work for God, know about the availability of training.

Each C of E church has a safeguarding officer who is the ‘go to’ person for all matters safeguarding. In the Cockermouth Area Team we have been busy ensuring that the CO (Basic Awareness), C1 (Foundation) and C2 (Leadership) training is up to date where it is a requirement for a particular role. This is happening in all our GMC C of E churches. You will be aware if you have not yet completed C0 which is the basic level for everyone who serves in our churches. As a reminder, if you already have C1 you don’t need to do C0 and if you already have C2 you don’t need to do C0 or C1.

To start with we are levelling up to ensure everyone who needs C0 has the opportunity to complete the training, preferably on-line, but if that is not possible, face to face.

Even if you are not currently fulfilling a role in church, the Basic C0 course represents an important life skill which you can access free of charge – a real win-win situation!

Your safeguarding officer will be willing to provide 1:1 support if you wish and we can facilitate training in the GMC office if you do not have a computer. Please contact Sue Lake in the GMC office if you want to take advantage of this support.

Safeguarding officers will also be following up soon to ensure DBS is up to date and where necessary C1 and C2 training (Foundation and Leadership) can be evidenced.

Ordination Live Stream

Thank you to all those of us who have been praying for Gill Davidson as she prepares to be ordained Deacon this coming Saturday 26th September in Carlisle Cathedral, 10.00am, and then licenced to serve us as a self-supporting minister within our Grasmoor Mission Community.
Please also hold Deborah Hoddinott, Christina Bretnall and Barbara Robinson in your prayers as Deborah starts her second and final year of training with St Mellitus College, North West, based at Liverpool Cathedral (and currently much online!) and as Christina and Barbara have recently started their formal ordination training with Cumbria Christian Learning, including residential week-ends of training at Rydal Hall and also, at present, much online training!
Regarding Gill's Ordination Service, much as due to the pandemic, attendance at Carlisle Cathedral service itself is very much restricted to invitation only,  so here are details of how we can join online. All services shall be filmed using multiple cameras, feeding into a livestream which shall appear simultaneously on the Diocese of Carlisle and Carlisle Cathedral Facebook pages.
If you would like to send Gill a card you could simply send one to: The Mission Community Office, Christ Church Parish Rooms and they will be passed on to her.
If you would like to contribute towards an ordination gift for Gill, please contact Stuart Hoddinott: email: to obtain the appropriate BACS details, or be advised of other ways of contributing.
Thank you and please can we continue to hold Gill, Deborah, Barbara and Christina in our prayers this week, for their ongoing training (pre-and post ordination) and for the years ahead of their continuing ministry amongst us? We are most grateful to all of them for having stepped out in faith and we are delighted that they have been affirmed by the church in their vocations and that we can now prayerfully support them in their 'onward journeying'.

The Bishop of Carlisle has appointed The Revd Canon Jane Charman  formerly Director of Ministry in the Salisbury Diocese, as Team Rector of the Benefice of the Cockermouth Area Team and Mission Community Leader of the Grasmoor Mission Community in the Carlisle Diocese.

As you may be aware, owing to Coronavirus restrictions the appointment process has been somewhat unusual. Jane was interviewed back in April on Zoom, and she was finally able a couple of weeks ago to come up and visit the area, and to have informal meetings with wardens and leadership teams of the CAT churches and with Mission Community clergy.

Various practical issues remain to be sorted, but Jane hopes to be able to take up her post in the early autumn. We look forward to getting to know Jane and her husband Bill better over the coming months.

The Dedication Prayer that Godfrey used in his final service on June 28th is shown in the image below. You can also download a printable version here.

VE Day

Godfrey led a short devotional service for VE Day on Friday, 8th May at 10am which is still available to view on the Grasmoor Mission Community Facebook page. Alternatively, you can use this printed service at home at any time. A short reflection to accompany the service can be found here.
